Michael John Foy Day, VIII, a Gold Legacy Life Member of The Birthplace of the Lone Star VFW POST 12223 in Montgomery, Texas, was elected in June 2024 as State Chaplain at the 104nd Department of Texas VFW State Convention held in Dallas, Texas and is currently serving his fourth term. Chaplain Day joined the VFW in 1992 at Post 11281 in Naples, Italy, and later transferred to Post 6386 in Ingleside, Texas, while serving on Active Duty and continued to do so until his retirement from the United States Navy in 2018. After retiring, he returned to his hometown of Montgomery, Texas.
As an Ordained Minister, Chaplain Day has served in many capacities at the Post, District, Department, and National levels. He served as a Post Commander, Senior Post Commander, Post Adjutant, Judge Advocate, 3rd Year Trustee, Buddy Poppy Chair, Americanism & Youth Chair, Homeless Veteran Chair, participated in Veterans in the Classroom, and submitted VPR’s and Community Service reports. He was honored as an All-State Commander and Quartermaster; All-American Quartermaster; All-State Team; and All-American Team. On the National level, he was appointed as Member of the Hospital Committee, Finance & Internal Organization Committee, Aide-de-Camp, and Special Aide-de-Camp. He is the recipient of the prestigious J.T. Rutherford Award since 1998 and Rev. William B. Moody Chaplain of the Year for 2021-2022.
Chaplain Day currently is a Life Member of the Disabled American Veterans, and National Home for Children. He a member of American Legion Post 654, USMC League, and Military Order of the Cootie. His community service includes the Conroe Church of Christ, 105 Honor Flight, Tri-County Mental Health Department, USMC Toys for Tots, 359th District Court Veterans Treatment Court, Montgomery County Sheriff Office Citizens Academy working as Chaplain/Mentee for the Veterans POD 7 in the Jail Ministry, Veterans Coordinator for the Montgomery ISD, and Commissioner on the Board of Directors for the Montgomery County Veterans Memorial Commission Park. He has completed over 40,000 hours of community service throughout the years.
He served for a total of 34 ½ years in both Gulf Wars and deployed eleven times. His military honors include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Award, Navy Unit Commendation Award, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War of Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Armed Forces Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Navy Overseas Service Ribbon, NATO Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia), Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait), and Navy Pistol Sharpshooter Ribbon. He holds the Joint Chiefs of Staff Badge, Navy Career Counselor Badge, and The Presidential Badge. He has two Texas Senate Resolutions and three Proclamation(s) from the City of Conroe, Houston, and Corpus Christi, Texas.
Chaplain Day’s theme since day one has always been "ONE Team.” Working together building a special bond amongst the VFW and the Auxiliary. He has three Sons, Matthew and Benjamin and Nicholas are both deceased and he currently resides in Montgomery, Texas with his four kitties.
